Invitation: Lecture “ATEX and hydrogen – safety as a prerequisite for the energy transition”

123ATEX.eu ® and KiK/MPI invite you to an essential knowledge event. The energy transition is in full swing, and hydrogen is globally recognised as one of the most important pillars. However, this promising energy carrier brings specific risks. Safety is therefore not a secondary matter, but the foundation for successful innovation.

On Thursday, December 11, 2025, we are organising an in-depth lecture on explosion safety and hydrogen safety.

Content and speakers

During this meeting, experts will share their insights. We start with an introduction to 123ATEX.eu ® by Erwin Huegen. He will explain who we are, what we stand for, and how our expertise in explosion safety relates to the local industry and safety challenges in the Zeeland/Terneuzen and Belgium region. Subsequently, Dr. Arief Dahoe – a specialist in the field of explosion safety, hydrogen safety, and combustion technology – will provide the main lectures.

Lecture 1: Hydrogen and Safety

Hydrogen is considered crucial for the transition in Europe and beyond. The ATEX directive forms the most important framework for explosion safety in Europe. This lecture will share insights into the safety challenges surrounding hydrogen and the application of this legislation within the energy transition.

Lecture 2: Hydrogen Embrittlement: The Invisible Risk

The embrittlement of metals due to hydrogen (hydrogen embrittlement) makes materials brittle and fragile. Dr. Arief Dahoe will elaborate on the underlying mechanisms, the consequences for installations and components, and the necessary safety measures.
