ATEX Awareness
The ATEX Awareness training is intended for non-technical personnel who deal with explosion hazards, and it covers the basic principles of explosion safety. In addition, it can also serve as an introduction for people who are going to work in explosive atmospheres for the first time. The dangers and risks are discussed in this training, and they are also clarified using practical examples.
The following topics are covered:
- Introduction to ATEX and explosion safety
- Legislation and regulations (e.g., ATEX Directives, Health and Safety at Work Act)
- The Explosion Protection Document (EPD)
- Organisational measures for explosion safety
- Technical measures to control explosion hazards
- What are sources of ignition?
- What are hazard sources?
- Classification of hazardous areas (Zones 0, 1, 2 / 20, 21, 22)
- Basic principles of protection methods (e.g., flameproof enclosure, intrinsic safety)
- Safely carrying out work within ATEX environments

Learning objectives of the ATEX Awareness Training:
- Gain insight into the fundamental principles of explosion safety (ATEX)
- Recognise risks in environments with explosion hazards
- Create awareness of the importance of safe behaviour in ATEX zones
- Identify and avoid potential hazard sources and sources of ignition
- Understand the relevant legislation and regulations concerning explosion safety (ATEX 114/153)
- Gain insight into organisational and technical preventative measures
- Know what the Explosion Protection Document (EPD) entails and why it is important
- Be able to work safely in and around hazardous areas, within one’s own responsibilities
