ATEX Workshop Mechanical

Personnel who maintain and repair mechanical equipment used in an explosive atmosphere must be knowledgeable about the requirements set for this. The ATEX Workshop Technician M training covers the basic principles of explosion safety, along with the repair, overhaul, and refurbishment of Ex-equipment, in accordance with EN-ISO-80079-36&37 and EN-IEC 60079-19.

This training is broadly the same as our ATEX Mechanical Engineering training; however, this course goes into greater detail on the technology and the requirements set for the repair, overhaul, and refurbishment of Ex-equipment, in accordance with EN-ISO-80079-36&37 and EN-IEC 60079-19. Significant attention is given to the way in which a repair, overhaul, or refurbishment must be administratively processed. The repair, overhaul, and refurbishment process is concluded with an ignition source analysis, which must demonstrate that the equipment is once again explosion-safe. The person who carried out the repair, overhaul, or refurbishment will need to affix a marking in the form of an ‘R’ in a square or triangle. The emphasis is on practical knowledge, safe working, and conformity with ATEX legislation.

The following topics are covered:

  • ATEX Legislation (brief overview)
  • Understanding Ex Protection methods: Ex h, Ex c, Ex b, Ex k
  • Reading Ex markings on components
  • What are you allowed/not allowed to modify on Ex-equipment?
  • Typical risks during processes such as grinding, welding, turning, assembly
  • Correct dismantling and inspection without loss of Ex integrity
  • Recognition of damage or deviations
  • Use of suitable tooling
  • Working according to procedure
  • Documentation and checking of measurement reports, inspection lists, serial numbers
  • Registration of work activities in a technical file
  • Working under a quality system (e.g. ISO 9001, ATEX-IEC Ex03)

Learning objectives of the ATEX Workshop Mechanical training:

  • Understand the fundamental principles of explosion safety and ATEX zoning
  • Learn to recognise and prevent sources of ignition in mechanical processing
  • Learn to handle Ex-certified components safely (dismantling, processing, assembly)
  • Learn to follow the correct work procedures during the maintenance, overhaul, or modification of Ex equipment
  • Learn to understand and apply certification markings and technical documentation
  • Learn to keep correct workshop records as part of the technical file
