Ignition assessment
Sometimes you have equipment whose explosion safety cannot be determined directly, but which is essential for your business operations. As the owner, you are obliged to ensure demonstrability. With an ignition assessment (also called ignition source assessment), you can demonstrate whether or not the equipment can be placed and used explosion-proof in a zone. The ignition source assessment is based on the standard EN 1127.
What is an ignition assessment?
An ignition assessment is an in-depth investigation into all possible ignition sources in a device. This allows you to determine whether the equipment, despite the lack of required documentation (Mechanical) or marking, is still acceptably safe for use in the relevant ATEX zone.
This applies to various types of equipment:
- Mechanical Equipment: For mechanical equipment placed on the market after July 1, 2003, an official ATEX approval (in accordance with the ATEX 114 Product Directive) is always mandatory. For mechanical equipment whose explosion safety is not documented or cannot be demonstrated by means of documentation or type plates, an ignition source assessment must be carried out. An important condition is that this equipment appears to be fundamentally explosion-proof and is older than July 1, 2003.
- Portable Work Equipment: Portable work equipment, such as a vacuum cleaner, cordless drill, temporary pump setup, or communication equipment, etc., must also be explosion-proof. Non-explosion-proof versions can, in many cases, based on a thorough ignition assessment(in accordance with EN 1127), still be used during work in a Zone 2 or 22, provided the correct procedures are followed.
