Zoning

The first step towards a safe working environment is the correct classification of your location. Zoning (or hazardous area classification) is essential for determining, for example, which explosion-proof equipment you may use where.

How is your zoning established?

The zoning of your location is established by carrying out a thorough risk assessment and in close consultation with a team within your organisation. The risk assessment is formed by:

  • Inventory of hazard sources
  • Inventory of present products and their specific properties (such as flash point or dispersion behaviour)
  • Potential ignition sources

Based on this, the location is divided into specific zones, distinguishing between gas/vapour and dust explosion hazards:

  • Gas/Vapour: Zones 0, 1 and 2
  • Dust: Zones 20, 21 and 22

In addition to determining the gas or dust group, the ignition temperature is determined. For dusty environments, it may be necessary to determine the smouldering temperature if dust layers may be present in the installation. In some situations, hybrid mixtures may occur (a mix of flammable gas and dust).

The zoning drawing

The classification of hazardous areas is ultimately translated into a zoning drawing. This drawing visually indicates which zone (and therefore which risk level) applies to which spot in your installation or building. We prefer a clear three-dimensional representation, so that the zoning is understandable for everyone within the organisation.
